UTAR Perak Campus Ground-Breaking Ceremony
On Sunday, 12 January 2003 at 3.00 p.m., about 30,000 people witnessed the historic ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the UTAR main Campus in Perak at the Campus site in Taman Bandar Baru, Kampar.
YABhg Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad, then Prime Minister of Malaysia, as the Guest of Honour officiated the auspicious occasion and delivered the keynote address.
YAB Dato' Seri DiRaja Mohamad Tajol Rosli Bin Ghazali, Menteri Besar of Perak, was also present to address the gathering. The host for the event, YB Dato' Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik, Chairman of UTAR Council, then Minister of Transport, and President of MCA, delivered the welcome speech.
Kampar's historical origins go back more than a century. The town is near enough to the cities (the nearest being Ipoh City, state capital of Perak) and yet distant enough from city congestion and distractions to offer a conducive environment for studies. The scenic 1300-acre land for the campus is a donation by the Perak state government. The University had engaged an internationally renowned educational planning consultant to design a comprehensive campus master plan which incorporates the scenic landscape and natural features of the land and lakes at the site.
The spatial design and concept driving the campus design will add to the wealth of a learning experience for the UTAR student. It will also feature social space that fosters the spirit of enriching cross cultural communication so typical of and yet unique to Malaysian culture.
