UTAR places high importance and value on research and development activities whether conducted by UTAR staff, or in collaboration with third parties. Recognising that these R&D activities may result in the creation of new inventions, technologies and discoveries which may have potential benefits to the community and society at large, UTAR has established a clear framework for the encouragement of discoveries and development of new knowledge and inventions.

Todate, UTAR has filed for patents in the area of pharmaceutical, solar system, civil engineering, electrical engineering and information technology. Some of these patents are also filed in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan and USA. These patent applications are a result of UTAR's internally funded research or research collaboration with the industry.
