UTAR Sweeps Top 5 Best Posters Award

at the 20th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar

UTAR students and faculty have made the University proud again by sweeping the top five Best Poster Awards at the 20th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar organised by the Malaysian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB) at Universiti Putra Malaysia on 21st March 2009.

Besides UTAR, other participating universities were Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia , Universiti Putra Malaysia , UCSI University , AIMST University , and Monash University . The seminar saw a total of 30 posters and 11 oral presentations.

UTAR final year students who won the top five Best Poster Awards were from the Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Biomedical Science programmes. The winners were:

1. Chang Yek Thoon

Poster title: Removal of Reactive Red 120 Using Chemically Modified Brown Seaweeds, Sargassum binderi

Supervisors: Dr. Wong Ching Lee and Dr. Hii Siew Ling

2. Wong Hoi Ling

Poster title: Studies on Extraction Methods of Alginates from Sargassum siliquosum

Supervisor: Dr. Wong Ching Lee

3. Lim Wyi Sian

Poster title: Real-Time RT-PCR Profiling on NFκB2 and A20 mRNA Expression from Human Hepatocarcinoma (HepG2) Cell Line

Supervisor: Dr. Chew Choy Hoong

4. Lisa Tho Lai-Yeng

Poster title: Antioxidant Properties of the Methanol Extracts of the Leaves and Stem of Leea indica

Supervisor: Dr. Lim Yang Mooi

5. Tan Kah Hin

Poster title: Isolation and Purification of Anti-tumour Promoting Compounds from Paraboea paniculata leaves.

Supervisor: Dr. Lim Yang Mooi

Ooi Shee Xuen, who gave an oral presentation titled "Association of Individual's Bitter-tasting Ability with Cruciferous Vegetables Preference Based on TAS2R38 Genotyping or PTC-Taster Phenotyping" under the supervision of Dr. Say Yee How, was also among the oral presenters who shared the prizes.
