Two final year Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) students were awarded the FC Yap Scholarship by the Lions Club of Subang Jaya at a presentation ceremony held at the Armada Hotel on 4 July 2008. They were Financial Economics student, Chun Yong Heng and Psychology student, Fiona Chuah Leh Hoon.

FC Yap Scholarship Fund was set up in memory of the late Mr. Yap Foo Cheow, a member of Lions Club Subang Jaya. He was known for his deep concern for youth and education. The scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, leadership qualities, involvement in extra-curricular activities as well as overall family income. They were rewarded RM 9,000 each to subsidise their tuition fees and living expenses.

Both recipients are strong advocates of living a balanced life. Chuah, 22, expressed, "To strike an equal emphasis for studies and leisure activities, it is important to practise good time management." Besides concentrating on her studies, Chuah is an active member in the Psychology Club and a music performer at a local church.

On the other hand, Chun, 22, is currently the Treasurer for the Economics Society. Apart from his extra-curricular and academic commitments, he enjoys swimming and jogging in his free time. He was previously a swimming instructor at his former college during his diploma studies.

When asked to elaborate on his study techniques to ensure academic success, Chun explained, "I constantly revise my work and approach my lecturers whenever I encounter difficulty in understanding the subject. In addition, I participate in group discussions with my classmates to broaden my perspective and solve problems in any specific area."

According to Chuah, excelling in her studies means studying the smart and creative way. She shared, "I always draw mind-maps and charts to remember key points. I find that paying attention in class also makes revising much easier."

They both reiterated that university life at UTAR is indeed an enriching experience as it gives them the opportunity to gain useful knowledge and skills to assist them in their future endeavour.

Chun said, "Through my assignments at UTAR, I was able to improve my communication and presentation skills. From active participation in extra curricular activities, I learned the importance of team spirit."

Campus experience goes beyond achieving academic satisfaction for Chuah. She explained, "My courses also taught me topics that I could apply in my personal life such as stress management, relaxation and having a positive mindset."

Besides the FC Yap Scholarship, deserving students at UTAR have received other scholarships or financial assistances to help them achieve their academic dreams.
