A team of nine students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) emerged as champion of the "Horse Sculpture Competition" organised by the Selangor Turf Club.

For their success in creating the most memorable and outstanding horse sculpture that left a deep impression in the minds of the judges, the team received a cheque for RM8,000 and a trophy at a ceremony held in Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur on 12 June 2009.

The winning team were second year Graphic Design students comprising Gino Cheah Sin Liang, Wai Xing Ling, Ng Kheng Boon, Shim Kar May, Wong Chi Lei, Loo Lian Yen, Kevin Tong Kin Weng, Liew Hean Jean and Tan Jean Cui.

Gino Cheah Sin Liang, the leader of the team, said that the team was randomly assembled to participate in the competition after they saw a poster about the competition at UTAR's Faculty of Creative Industries.

On the learning experience gained from their participation in the competition, Cheah enthused, "We learn about working as a team and of course, budgeting, and we used recycled items for the winning masterpiece."

The competing teams were given one week to complete their works of art, which were presented at one of the open spaces at the race club for viewing and evaluation. Their works were judged based on content, originality, technique and overall aesthetic factors.

The UTAR team beat 11 other teams comprising of arts students from local institutions of higher learning.
